Annotations
Pin notes to dates on your traffic chart so spikes and drops stay explainable
An annotation is a note pinned to a moment, or a date range, on the main traffic chart. Use them for launches, deploys, campaigns, outages, or anything else that explains why the line moved.
Annotations show as pins along the chart on the Main dashboard. They also show, read-only, on the Performance chart.
Add an annotation
- Open the site's Main page.
- Click Annotate above the chart, or click a point on the chart to start a note at that time.
- Fill in the form:
- Title: what happened, up to 120 characters.
- Date and time: when it happened. Turn on Date range to set Starts and Ends instead. The end must be after the start.
- Note (optional): more context, up to 2,000 characters.
- Color: neutral, or one of five marker colors.
- Icon (optional): an emoji shown in the pin.
- Applies to: This site or All sites in the organization. You only see this choice if you can manage organization-wide annotations.
- Show on public dashboard and shared links: off by default.
- Click Add annotation.
View, edit, and delete
Hover a pin to see its notes. Pins that land close together are grouped into one. Click a pin to open its notes, then use the edit or delete buttons on a note. Deleting asks you to confirm and can't be undone.
Notes that apply to every site carry an All sites badge. Notes visible to the public carry a Public badge.

Public dashboards and shared links
If a site is public, or you share it through a private link, visitors only see annotations with Show on public dashboard and shared links turned on. Everything else stays visible to your organization only. Private-link viewers can't add or edit annotations, even if they're signed in.
Annotations are also available through the API and the get_annotations tool in the MCP server.
